Walk into any supermarket right now and protein is everywhere. It is in the cereal, the water, the ice cream, the coffee, even the pancakes. Over the last few years, protein has gone from a nutrient that athletes cared about to a national obsession, marketed as the answer to weight loss, energy, ageing and almost everything in between. So it landed like a small earthquake when a major new scientific review suggested that many of us may actually be eating too much of it.

The review, published on 31 July 2026 in a Cell Press journal, pulled together more than 350 studies on protein and ageing. Its conclusion was not that protein is bad, but something more nuanced and far more interesting. For a lot of people, especially those who are not very active, eating less protein may support healthier ageing and, in some cases, a longer life.

The question was never whether we need protein. We do. The real question is how much, and for years the answer has been shaped more by marketing than by biology.

What the review actually found

Across hundreds of studies, lower protein intake was linked to a cluster of benefits that scientists associate with healthy ageing: better metabolic function, lower inflammation, reduced cellular damage and improved maintenance of healthy cells. In other words, eating less protein appeared to nudge the body into a mode where it repairs and protects itself more efficiently. It is exactly the kind of finding that runs against the message printed on half the packages in your kitchen.

The hormone doing the quiet work

Much of the effect seems to run through a single hormone with an unglamorous name, fibroblast growth factor 21, or FGF21. When protein intake drops, FGF21 rises, and that rise is tied to higher energy expenditure, better blood sugar control and lower inflammation. In animal studies the signal was striking. Mice with higher FGF21 levels lived noticeably longer, with females living about 40 percent longer and males about 30 percent longer. Mice are not people, and that difference genuinely matters, but the mechanism gives scientists a plausible reason for what the human data keeps hinting at.

Why this is so hard to believe

Part of what makes this research so jarring is how deeply the opposite idea is baked into our culture. We have been told, again and again, that more protein means more muscle, more fullness and more health, and an entire industry is built on that promise. But the belief that if some is good then more must be better rarely survives contact with human biology. Water, oxygen, exercise and sleep all follow a curve rather than a straight line, and this review suggests protein may be no different.

The part the headlines leave out

Here is the crucial caveat, and it is the part that responsible coverage cannot skip. The benefits of lower protein depend heavily on who you are. Age, activity level and overall health change the equation completely. Older adults, for example, often need more protein rather than less, to protect against the muscle loss that comes with ageing. Athletes, people recovering from illness or surgery, and anyone building strength have real and elevated needs. This review is not a green light to slash protein across the board. It is a warning against treating one number as the right answer for everyone.

So what should you actually do?

The honest takeaway is less dramatic than the headlines, and far more useful. For a healthy, fairly sedentary adult who has been chasing high protein targets out of habit, there is probably little benefit in overdoing it and possibly some cost. Quality tends to matter more than sheer quantity, and plant based sources bring benefits that reach well beyond protein alone. The smartest move is not to follow the loudest trend, but to match your intake to your actual life, your age and your goals, and to speak with a doctor or a dietitian before making any big change.
